What plumbing actually costs on the Kapiti Coast

Hourly rates, hot water replacements, bathroom renovations and filtration — the real ranges, and what moves a job from one end of a range to the other.

Most plumbing prices genuinely do depend on the property, which is why so few tradespeople publish them. The ranges are still useful though, so here they are, along with what moves a job within each one.

All figures exclude GST. They are indicative — a quote after seeing the job is the real number.

Hourly rate

Licensed plumbers on the coast typically charge between $95 and $130 per hour + GST, depending on the work and the materials involved.

Small jobs are rarely priced purely by the hour, because travel and materials are a bigger share of a one-hour visit than a full-day one. For anything beyond a quick repair, a fixed quote is the more useful number.

Hot water

The single most common replacement, and the widest spread:

System Install cost Notes
Electric cylinder $2,500 – $4,500 Like-for-like swap; cheapest to fit, dearest to run
Gas continuous-flow $3,500 – $6,000 Depends on gas connection and flue runs
Heat-pump cylinder $5,500 – $9,000 Highest upfront, lowest running cost

What moves the price: whether the new unit fits where the old one sat, how much pipework needs reworking, and whether a tempering valve has to be added. Since November 2024 a tempering valve is required on replacements, which on older houses occasionally means more pipework than expected.

Choosing between the three is its own question — see gas, electric or heat-pump, and sizing if you go continuous-flow.

Bathroom renovation

Plumbing on a standard Kapiti bathroom renovation typically lands between $4,500 and $9,500.

The layout decides it. Keeping fixtures where they are is at the bottom of the range. Moving the toilet, relocating the shower, or converting to a wet area pushes toward the top, because pipework in floors and walls is where the hours go. Full detail in the bathroom renovation checklist.

Water filtration

System Cost
Under-sink 3-stage filter $400 – $700
Whole-house mains supply $1,500 – $3,000
Bore or rainwater with UV $2,500 – $4,500

Bore and tank systems cost more because flow rate and tank pressure setup vary property to property. Common out toward Otaki and the Levin rural fringe. See whole-house filtration.

Gasfitting

Gas work is quoted per job rather than per hour, because the variables — appliance, gas type, distance from the bottle bay or meter, flue requirements — swing the number more than labour time does. A continuous-flow install sits in the range above. Hob connections and bayonet points are usually a few hundred dollars when done alongside other work, and more as a standalone visit.

Every gas job includes the compliance certificate. That is not an optional extra.

What actually moves a quote

  • Access. A cylinder in a tight roof space takes longer than one standing in a garage.
  • What is behind the wall. Older Kapiti houses turn up undersized pipe, previous work done badly, and materials no longer manufactured.
  • Whether the layout moves. The biggest single factor on renovations.
  • Bundling. Two jobs in one visit cost less than two visits. If something else is due, mention it while quoting.
  • Timing. Work that has to happen this week costs more than work that can be scheduled.

On the cheapest quote

If one quote is dramatically under the others, find out why before taking it. Sometimes it is a genuinely leaner operator with lower overheads. Sometimes it excludes the compliance certificate, the tempering valve, or making good after the work. Compare what is included, not just the total.
