Quick answers to the questions Kapiti Coast homeowners ask most. If yours isn’t here, phone Tony on 021 198 3113.
General
What areas do you service?
Pipe Down Plumbing covers the Kapiti Coast and beyond — Paraparaumu, Paraparaumu Beach, Waikanae, Raumati Beach, Raumati South, Otaki, Otaki Beach, Plimmerton, Levin, Lower Hutt, Upper Hutt and surrounds, plus the wider Wellington region including Porirua.
If you are unsure whether we cover your address, phone Tony on 021 198 3113 and we will let you know.
Are you a Master Plumbers member?
Yes. Pipe Down Plumbing is a Master Plumbers New Zealand member. That means we work to the standards set by the industry body and you have access to Master Plumbers Guarantee on most work.
Tony is also PGDB-licensed for plumbing and gasfitting.
How quickly will you come back with a quote?
For most jobs we come back to you the same day or the next working morning. Phone or use the form on this site and we will be in touch with a price.
Larger jobs — full bathroom or kitchen renovations, new builds — usually need an on-site visit so the quote is accurate.
What hours does Tony work?
Trading hours are Monday to Friday, 7:00 am to 5:00 pm. Saturday work is available by appointment. Outside those hours, leave a message or use the form on this site and Tony will be in touch the next working morning.
Booking ahead is the best way to secure a slot — Tony works as a sole tradesman and the diary fills quickly during busy periods.
Pricing & quotes
Do you give free quotes?
Yes. Quotes are free for all jobs across the Kapiti Coast, and there is no call-out fee for local work.
You can request a quote through the form on this site or phone Tony directly.
How much does a plumber charge per hour in Kapiti?
Hourly rates for licensed plumbers on the Kapiti Coast typically sit between NZ$95 and NZ$130 plus GST, depending on the type of work and the materials involved.
For most jobs we prefer to give a fixed quote so you know the price up front rather than paying by the hour. Phone Tony on 021 198 3113 for a free quote.
What forms of payment do you accept?
We accept bank transfer and cash. An invoice is sent on completion of the job and payment is due within the date shown on the invoice.
For larger projects we can agree progress payments in writing before the work starts.
Plumbing
How do I know if I have a hidden water leak?
Common signs of a hidden leak are an unexpected jump in your water bill, damp patches on walls or ceilings, the sound of running water when nothing is on, mould or mildew where there shouldn't be, and unexplained warm spots on the floor over hot-water lines.
Catching a leak early saves money and prevents structural damage. We use leak detection tools to find the exact source without unnecessary cutting into walls or floors. Phone 021 198 3113 if you suspect a leak.
When should I replace my hot water cylinder?
Most New Zealand hot water cylinders last 10 to 15 years. If yours is approaching that age, leaking from the base, producing rusty water, making knocking or popping noises, or struggling to heat enough water for a normal day, it is time to consider replacement.
Replacing a failing cylinder before it bursts is much cheaper than dealing with the water damage afterwards. We can install electric, gas or heat-pump cylinders. Phone Tony for a free assessment.
Do you install whole-house water filtration systems?
Yes. We install both point-of-use water filters (under-sink, kitchen, bathroom) and whole-house water filtration systems on the Kapiti Coast.
Whole-house systems remove sediment, chlorine and other contaminants from every tap in the house. We can talk you through the right system for your water source — town supply, bore or rainwater.
Do you do bathroom and kitchen renovations?
Yes — full plumbing for new bathrooms, kitchens and laundries on the Kapiti Coast, including new builds, extensions and full renovations. Renovations are a big part of what Tony does.
We coordinate with your builder, tiler and electrician so the plumbing rough-in lands at the right time and the finish-out goes smoothly. Quotes are free.
How long does the plumbing rough-in take for a bathroom renovation?
A standard bathroom rough-in — relocating waste, hot and cold lines, vent stack and shower mixer — usually runs over two to four working days, depending on whether the floor is concrete or timber and how much demo has been done.
Final fit-out (tapware, toilet, vanity connections, shower mixer trim) happens once tiling and cabinetry are complete.
What does a plumber need to know for a kitchen renovation?
Useful to share up front: where the sink is moving, whether the dishwasher and fridge ice-maker are getting plumbing, if the hob is gas (and whether it needs a new bayonet), and whether you are adding filtered water or a hot/boiling-water tap.
If gas is involved the gas hob and bayonet work must be done by a licensed gasfitter — Tony covers both plumbing and gasfitting, so there is one tradesman on site rather than two.
Gasfitting
Do you install gas hot water systems?
Yes. We install gas continuous-flow (instantaneous) hot water units and gas storage cylinders, on both natural gas and LPG. All gas hot water installations include a Gas Safety Certificate as required under New Zealand regulations.
Gas continuous-flow systems are popular on the Kapiti Coast because they only heat water as you use it — no standing tank to keep hot. We can advise on the right size for your household.
Are gas appliances safe in the home?
Modern gas appliances installed by a licensed gasfitter and certified to the New Zealand standard are safe. Risks come from poor installation, missing flues, or lack of ventilation.
In New Zealand any gas work must be done by a PGDB-licensed gasfitter and signed off with a Gas Safety Certificate. Pipe Down Plumbing is fully licensed.
